Dr Rena Costa

Dr. Rena Costa (1918–2002) will always be remem-bered for her extraordinary contribution to the revival of the Yiddish language and culture in the academic world—as a living memorial to the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, for whom Yiddish, their mame-loshn, was a native tongue.

A beloved founding member of the Friends of Bar-Ilan Association and both the American and World Boards of Governors, Dr. Costa played a vital role in advancing Yiddish language studies, promoting higher education, and enriching the Yiddish cultural heritage.

Having left Europe just before World War II, Dr. Costa built a successful career in the diamond industry, where she earned a reputation for integrity and sharp business sense—remarkable achievements in a field that, at the time, largely excluded women. Known for always speaking her mind, she was nonetheless cherished by many friends who valued her warmth, sincerity, and vibrant personality.
