Literature of Jewish Languages

Two centers run by the Department, the Rena Costa Center for Yiddish Studies and the Salti Center for Ladino Studies, offer research tracks in Yiddish and Ladino culture and literature:

  • Rena Costa Center for Yiddish Studies: The center prepares candidates for writing dissertations on Yiddish literature or the influences of Yiddish literature on Hebrew writing.  Language proficiency studies will bring students to a level that enables research, comprehension of literary and scientific texts and writing about Yiddish literature. Specialization will be offered in archaic Yiddish of the 16th and 17th centuries, modern Yiddish language and literature (poetry, prose, plays and journalism), and the historiography of Yiddish literature.

  • Salti Center for Ladino Studies: The center offers interdisciplinary tracks on Ladino language and literature in different countries and periods, from oral traditions to all genres of written literature. Research projects will be chosen in keeping with scholastic background and fields of interest to promote interdisciplinary research of Ladino literature and culture. Special scholarships are available for those interested.
