תחומי עניין

ד"ר אילאיל באום היא מרצה וחוקרת לאדינו ויהדות ספרד בסגל הבכיר במכון סלטי לחקר הלאדינו. מחקריה מתמקדים ביחסי הגומלין בין שפה וזהות בין יהודי ספרד ערב גירוש ספרד; וכן בקרב מגורשי ספרד דוברי הלאדינו, במיוחד בדורות הראשונים לאחר גירושם ב-1492 במקומות מושבם החדשים במגרב ובאימפריה העות'מאנית. הדוקטורט שלה הוא מהאוניברסיטה העברית (2018), שכלל שנתיים של עבודת מחקר באוניברסיטת ברצלונה. בעבר הייתה פוסט-דוקטורנטית במכון פרנקל ללימודי יהדות באוניברסיטת מישיגן ובתכנית עמיתי מרטין בובר באוניברסיטה העברית. בימים אלה היא עובדת על סיום כתיבתו של ספרה Language and identity among the Jews of Christian Spain. הספר בוחן את שימושי השפה ופרקטיקות של תרגום, העתקה וקריאה בקרב חוגי האליטה היהודית בספרד הנוצרית ערב הגירוש, וכיצד אלה משקפים את יחסם של היהודים עם שכניהם הנוצרים והמוסלמים. מאמריה האחרונים התפרסמו ב-Medieval Encounters וב-Jewish Quarterly Review.
